If you are looking to keep your teeth white and bright for years to come, then we have tips to share with you! Time and age can cause your teeth to fade and lose their time. However, many foods can darken or stain your teeth that you may be consuming each day.

To help you keep your teeth white and beautiful, our dentists are Frandsen Dental in Grantsville, Utah, are happy to share with you some foods that can stain your teeth if you neglect proper oral hygiene habits while consuming them.

Here is a list of foods that can stain your teeth:

  • Red and white wine: Red wine has dark colors and is high in acidity that can stain your teeth. However, white wine contains much more acidity than red wine, which can cause more discoloration in a yellowish hue and damage to your teeth.
  • Curry: A common spice called curry can appear in many enticing dishes. The thick yellow pigment in curry contains a yellow coloring that can stick to your teeth and cause severe staining.
  • Coffee: Coffee is made from dark beans and substances that can quickly darken your teeth and cause them to discolor quickly.
  • Pasta or tomato sauce: Tomatoes are high in acidity and bright red in most cases. As a result, pasta sauce can stain your teeth.
  • Balsamic vinegar: Vinegar is commonly known as a healthy addition to a diet when used correctly. However, the dark natural color can stick to your teeth causing it to stain.
  • Tea: Many different kinds of teas can cause your white teeth to fade and erode through your tooth enamel, including white teas.
  • Berries: Berries contain many essential antioxidants and nutrients our bodies need. However, they also are deeply colored which can cling to your teeth causing them to stain.
  • Sodas: Sodas contain many dyes that can darken your teeth. The sugar in sodas can also create more bacteria and plaque buildup in your teeth causing damage.
  • Sports Drinks: Sports drinks are high in acids and dyes that can darken and damage your teeth. Even sugar-free sports drinks can cause your teeth to become discolored and stained.

One interesting note is, studies show if you do consume some of these foods, to mix them with vegetables like kale, spinach, and so forth because they can counter well with the dyes in the foods and help brush away the dark hues from your teeth as you eat. Also, some foods like apples and pears, for example, contain high water counts which can easily slide around your teeth, making these foods almost like a natural floss.

No matter what you choose to eat in your diet, the important thing to remember when keeping your teeth clean and white is proper oral hygiene. Brushing twice a day and flossing every day is the key in the white and beautiful appearance of your smile. Your teeth are necessary to keep clean so that you can preserve them for a lifetime.
