Sometimes, brushing your teeth becomes a mindless task. When we do it over and over again, it is easy to let the quality slip and bad habits creep in as we brush. Here are some common bad habits to avoid while brushing your teeth.
Brushing Too Quickly: On average, people spend about 45 seconds brushing their teeth. The American Dental Association (ADA), however, recommends brushing for a full two minutes each time you brush. If you are rushing through your brushing time, try setting a timer.
Using a Stiff-Bristled Brush: You should only use a very soft-bristled toothbrush when brushing your teeth. A medium-to-stiff bristled brush will likely scrape up your gum tissues and tooth enamel, opening them up to infection, damage and disease. Choose a brush that has earned the ADA Seal of acceptance for a quality product.
Keeping Your Toothbrush for Too Long: Toothbrushes are made to be used for a few months, then thrown out and replaced. If you have had your toothbrush for more than three or four months, it’s time to get a new one. If your brush has frayed bristles or has been contaminated in any way, replace it immediately.
